Well, I guess it's all about your perspective. With spring in the air and fish on the move, anglers start to think about trophy trout on their migratory run to spawn.

Yes it's true, this time of year brings great opportunity to put a BIG trout in the net. Fish in the 10 to 13 lb range are not uncommon in many of our river systems. We all hear about the guy that stuck a 30 inch pig. I'm no exception. I want a BIG trophy in the net just like the next guy. But ya know sometimes it's about the company you're with, sometimes it's about the environment you're in and sometimes it's just about leaving it all behind for the solitude and inner peace.

Some great philosopher once said many men fish a life time not knowing what they are really looking for already exists inside them. Oh, who the heck am I kidding? Let's go find the BIG 30 incher, size does matter!

WET A LINE !!
BRENT

Fly Tying Video: Big Red-Soft Hackle-Chuck Prather's Little Red Swingin' Fly

Works great swinging through a riffle or even behind a streamer being stripped or dead-drifted.

CHUCK PRATHER'S LITTLE RED SWINGIN' FLY
Hook: TMC 260 BL (12-16)
Thread: UNI Red 8/0
Segmentation: Medium Silver Wire
Thorax: Partridge Underfeather
Soft Hackle: Partridge Shoulder Feather

Fish ON!
--Shannon

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.hookflyfishing.com/blog/2010/02/chuck-prathers-little-red-swingin-fly.html' title='Fly Tying Video: Big Red-Soft Hackle-Chuck Prather's Little Red Swingin' Now a person is able to spend more time fishing, rather than spending time looking for a feeding fish. Many fish are feeding from 11:00 A.M. to 4:30.

Some fish are starting to look for larger bugs in the water. I would recommend trying something larger than a Midge. Try using a size 12-16 Golden Stone fly or a size 16 Pheasant Tail for an attractor, or a red or brown San Juan worm. I hear a Pat's Rubber Legs is also working well from time to time. Eggs and scuds will also be useful as an attractor in the coming weeks.

I saw BWO adults today, and yes the fish did to! Of coarse the standard arsenal of midges is always a key ingredient. Bead head flies serve many purposes, from weighting the fly, to adding Bling or charter to the fly. Whatever the case may be, one fact remains the same, it is trying to represent a natural food source or create an attractor or searcher pattern. I personally don't use a lot of beads other than Copper Johns and two different Streamers, The Wooly Bugger and a Slumpbuster. I do however use small glass beads on quite a few of my Midge patterns. The small glass bead is to represent the gas bubble that midge and other small aquatic insects use to ride to the surface. I do believe, in certain situations, the glass bead on some midge patterns is very effective. Many midge pupa get stuck either in the surface film trying to escape surface tension, or in their shuck to become a winged adult. During a midge hatch I sometimes grease my pupa allowing it to ride in the surface film, simulating this action of the pupa. This technique can be quite productive, give it a try sometime during a midge hatch!

WET A LINE!!
BRENT

daVinci Fly Tying, Dr. G.
