Patagonia's New Guidewater Waders

These waders are amazingly comfortable and durable and have become my all-time favorites, hands-down.

Patagonia built their new Guidewater Waders to be the toughest, most puncture-resistant, lightest, waterproof/breathable wader on the market. They feature a revised innovative internal suspension system that allows relief without removing jacket or vest.

Metalhead has arrived. FINALLY!

"The last in the series from AEG (Trout Bum diaries), Metalhead chronicles the epic journey of five fish bums and their friends as they travel to remote Northwestern wilderness in search of legendary steelhead; the hottest freshwater fish you can catch on a fly rod and also a fish whose survival hangs in the balance."

Could this be the future of fly Tying? I am not sure what the cost of this robot is, but I am sure it would have to tie a lot of flies to pay for one.

The Improved Clinch Knot

This knot seems to be the most common fly fishing knot for tippet to fly connections. It can be used at the eye of the fly or the bend of the fly hook.

Labels: ,

The Perfection Loop

This knot is ideal for butt sections at the ends of fly lines for connecting leaders via a loop-to-loop connections (also known as a handshake connections).

1. Holding the standing line in one hand, lay down a loop in front of the standing line.
2. Lay a loop behind the standing line and bring the tag end to the front of the front loop.
3. Lay the tag end between the two loops and pinch it with the fingers and thumb holding the standing line.
4. Pull the back loop through the front loop and tighten by pulling the standing line.

The size of the loop is determined by two things, the back loop size and the standing line. Work with this knot until you can really fine tune the size of your loop.

This concise video tutorial on the proper technique and steps for tying a perfection loop really helps when learning this knot.

The Fly Fishing Retailer's Show at the Convention Center in Downtown Denver, CO

While the FFR was smaller this year and the new products were harder to find, one thing that stood out for me was that Spey Casting is something I am rapidly becoming addicted to. From the TFO Switch Rods, to the Scott T2H Rods, and, of course, Loop Tackle Design's venerable line of phenomenal two handed rods, there is something for everyone. These longer sticks (10+' to more than 16') are not necessarily for the monstrous waters we might think. There are plenty of applications in Colorado (such as the Colorado River and many miles of the South Platte as well as the North Platte and more) where these rods and the associated techniques can put you into more fish. Here's a little something that I found because I needed to get even more inspired:

Bass on the Fly

Water temps are on the rise in the urban lakes and that means really great action targeting Small Mouth Bass. Fishing for this sport fish with flies is as much fun as anything else you will do in your life. There are a few things to think about when targeting bass. Use bigger, nastier flies, which means heavier leaders and tippets to as well as faster rods and heavier lines. Don't forget that bass fishing is an early riser's sport. Don't let those "10am Dry Fly Hatch" habits foul your opportunity for fishing here. You'll need to be on the water and rolling early in the morning.

Check out Weapons of Bass Production, a video starring Landon Mayer and John Barr. It really nails the specifics on some of the most important things everyone should know about going after this great fish. Landon and John cover the equipment from flies and tippet to rods and float tubes, they talk tactics, weather, locations, holding lies and everything else. The final word is that they hook up on some MONSTERS!
